Artist's Description

On 11 September 1683 the city walls of Vienna were collapsing by the besieging of the Ottoman Empire Army allied with the Tartars - this siege had been continuing for two months. On 12 September 1683 Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Holy Roman Empire, under the command of King John III Sobieski led the charge with his Polish Hussars against the Ottomans and Tartars. On the evening of the 12th the formidable Ottoman and Tartar forces were routed with little casualties to the Polish and allies freeing Vienna. The Ottomans fled leaving all there heavy military ordnance and 15,000 fine Ottoman military tents . . . it is said that if this event did not occur as it did that Europe would be a completely different continent today.
This painting depicts the morning of September 12th ~ before the battle began. The Polish Army all took Holy Communion the morning before the battle began . . .

His technique of using glaze upon glaze creates colors that are deep, rich and vibrant. There is a profound sense of mystery, nuance, symbolism and timelessness in the...
