Artist's Description
This is a personal painting from my years in recovery ... darkness, evil and the storms of life are on the right side while light, hope and twelve steps are on the left. The first of the twelve steps is denial. The scroll in the foreground quotes scripture, "I will restore...", "Do not be deceived ... whatever a man sows this he shall reap.." The Chinese Kanji symbols on the scroll are the words for: Devil, pictorially - "secret man in the garden under the cover of trees"; Righteousness, pictorially - "I under the slain lamb"; Good Fortune, Happiness, pictorially - "one person in the garden with Shang Ti, the heavenly ruler."
About Matt Konar
Konar's work is both light and dark in subject, approaching at every turn both the whimsical and the mischievous. He uses the canvas as a stage to capture moments of love and heroism, as well as times of human folly. His characters come from real life, from songs, from poems and from stories. All the stories take place under a starry sky with the drama of the constellations. Unexpected details are presented through the book on a shelf, the image in a mirror, the wallpaper pattern, an individual leaf, and many other visual gestures waiting to be unlocked by the viewer.
