Description
When my grandfather immigrated from Poland to the United States (circa 1907) he came in through Ellis Island, NYC ... he had very little money, the boarding houses and streets were dangerous, so he searched for a safe place to sleep. He came upon a cemetery and he knew the dead could not hurt him. This painting depicts that scene, with my grandfather Joseph safely sleeping and the constellation Auriga, the good Shepard watching over him. The constellations: Orion, Taurus, Aries, Perseus, Gemini, Cancer, and Andromeda are also seen playing out the drama of good verses evil in the nighttime sky.
The tombstones bear the names of many of my past relatives. Joseph's mother's marker lies at his feet. His children, my father and his daughter in-law, my mother, surround him ~ my favorite uncle Chet, an artist, is in the foreground.
